Miss Sherlock the Cat, Shares Her Tale
Dear Miss Nancy,
Thank you for your recent e-mail telling us that our Combo Cat Scratcher is on its way. Watson and I are looking forward to its arrival.
As to your inquiry about my name - “Miss” Sherlock - I must tell you it is a humorous story, as well as a purrfect crime in deception; Sherlock Holmes & John Watson being our inspiration and namesakes.
Our breeder, reputable in most ways, told our owners that I was of the male persuasion. I felt no need to dispute her assessment as I was perfectly happy playing “like the boys” with my friend Watson. Although we are not related, Watson and I arrived at kittenhood at roughly the same time. We are Maine Coon cats - I am a brown classic and Watson is a red classic (And by the way, Watson’s dad was centerfold in last month’s issue of Cat Fancy).
So very early on, in my new home, I quickly determined that my name to be was “Sherlock”. Not to be rude or inhospitable, I answered to it without fail for close to five months. However, just as things were getting familiar, my secret was revealed when a nice woman at Dr. Hance’s office told my owners that I was not a boy after all, but in biological terms, A GIRL! Much to my dismay, she told my owners that I could not be “snipped” and sent home immediately - like Watson - but would have to have a more extended time for recovery. After SHOCK and AWE ensued on the part of my owners and the staff at Dr. Hance’s office, I thereafter rebelled by removing my stitches after I got home.
In due time, my owners have resigned themselves to calling me “Miss” Sherlock - very affectionately I think - and have treated me with the flourish and fanfare that only the female gender can appreciate.
Again, thank you for your inquiry. I will let you know when the Combo Cat Scratcher arrives.
- Miss Sherlock
